"Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." -Matthew 18: 4-5
Dan and I overheard their conversation. Sitting behind us was a Hispanic mother and her daughter who was probably a second or third grader. During the entire hour we ate, mother and daughter talked. They had a wonderful conversation. Her mom leaned closer to her, made eye contact, listened carefully, and treasured their conversation. The daughter was quiet, engaged, and taking in every moment of their time together.
These past few weeks, I have been thinking about our children, especially our young children in school. Each time a violent event happens in school, children absorb the fear, the angry words, and the anxiety like little sponges. Children are keenly aware of safety. So much of our world is noisy, scary, spent in front of screens, or rushed. Children are hurt each day by all of these things.
So I ask each one of you…if you have an opportunity to spend time with a child, cherish that time. Your conversations and love matter more to them than anything in the world.
